IMTA piano auditions are held each winter for our region in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Towns included in this district include Ottumwa, Mt. Pleasant, Burlington, Ft. Madison, and Washington. Students who choose to take part must be proficient in technic and theory for their age level. A theory exam includes ear training, a knowledge of Italian musical terms, as well as understanding, intervals, key signatures, chord qualities, rhythms and transposition. Each student must play three memorized pieces from different style periods as listed in the Iowa syllabus. It is a daunting, but rewarding experience. One student from each age division may be chosen to advance to the state auditions held in Ames on March 17.
Five pianists from our studio will take part in this event. They are Jillian Goff, age 9 in Level A; Lara Kliewer, age 10 in Level B; Madelina Hora, age 15 and Anne Buckwalter, age 14 in Level D, and Kaylee Hershberger, age 16 in Level E.
We congratulate all five of these students who are working hard to put the finishing touches on their repertoire before they perform at Iowa Wesleyan College! They have taken the road less traveled.
